In the 19th century Prescot was the centre of the English watch making industry,
all of the watch parts and tools that were required for that trade were made here,
however that industry has long since ended and there is little evidence of the workshops
that had once existed all over Prescot. During the middle part of the 20th century
a lot of effort has been made by local historians to record as much of the history
as possible and Prescot Museum created around 1980-
The name Prescot was probably derived from the Saxon words Preost (for Priest) and Cot (a dwelling) and goes back at least to the 12th century and even further and there was apparently a theatre in Shakespeare’s time, he may even have visited Prescot. The most ancient site is the churchyard next to Prescot Parish Church, rebuilt during the 18th century on the site of a much older church. One of the most unusual things to see in Prescot churchyard is a wall with three windows which may have been part of a house or an out building, there is also a BICC war memorial which has recently been created.
